Old Fashioned Christmas

Our annual Old Fashioned Christmas was a warm and relaxing enening. Thanks to all who helped make it a success.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  We had several visitors to our S.V. Historical Society lately. Larry and Cathy Cole were in from California. His mother was Mary Heggenstaller. I had the pleasure of meeting them and giving them a brief tour of Sugar Valley.He got to see his ancestor's farm ( near Carroll) and also the final resting place of several of his relatives (Eastville Cemetary). They both enjoyed seeing the covered bridge, the old mill and the old Sugar Valley High School.
Just after Christmas Jim Kemmerer came in from OK. and met with about 15 of his Kemmerer relatives at the Bull Run School. He has much information on his family that he shared with us. We all enjoyed hearing his stories and seeing the old photos he brought.
We hope these fine folks continue to visit us as we are soon to complete our new building.
The book SUGAR VALLEY VILLAGES published by Arcadia Publishing ***********************************
   On July 30 Jerry Miller gave a presentation about the Colby murders of 1887. Here is some things we learned -  Isaiah Colby was the son of John and Anna Colby . They also adopted Nora Jodun, who was the daughter of Flavious "Flavel" and Frances Clair Jodun of Flemington.They lived on 40 acres of land that was owned by John Colby and was reported to be in terrible condition and close to being worth nothing.
 On August 8, 1887, the bodies of  Isaiah Colby,36, and Nora Colby ,21 , were found, shot to death, at their home along Cherry Run in the Tylersville Narrows.
Nora was shot several times, Isaiah laying next to her, was shot in the  right eye.
Their toddler, Augustus, was home at the time of the murders, but was inside of the house.
After the presentation Jerry led the group to the spot in the woods where we believe the murders took place.
